Natural Gemstones with Character – Ten Years of MANĒKO

A fine gemstone is more than a colour or a carat weight. It is the starting point for a piece of jewellery with its own identity.

For the past ten years, MANĒKO has traded natural gemstones from India, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka across different markets. That experience informs how we look at a stone today: its colour, proportions, cut and individual character, and the possibilities it offers the person who will work with it.

Ten years of experience in the gemstone trade

Working with gemstones over time develops an eye for detail. Two stones with the same name and weight can create entirely different impressions. A subtle shift in colour, the balance of a cut or the proportions of a stone can change the direction of a design.

Our approach brings that practical trading experience into a personal conversation with jewellers, goldsmiths and designers. We take the project as our starting point, whether the brief is a quiet colour accent, an expressive centre stone or a carefully balanced composition.

Natural gemstones from India, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka

Our trading history connects us with India, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. Working across these markets has introduced us to different stones, approaches to cutting and ways of selecting material for jewellery. Today, direct imports from Sri Lanka are also part of our business.

These relationships are part of our commercial history. The sourcing and any documented origin of a particular gemstone are considered individually, so the information accompanying the stone remains relevant to the piece you choose.

Quality begins with the individual stone

We trade high-quality natural gemstones, selected with attention to their visual character and potential in a finished setting. We consider colour, cut, proportions and clarity together. Size alone does not decide whether a gemstone is right for a design.

Natural variations give stones their individuality. Some designs call for a clear, understated appearance; others benefit from a distinctive colour or an expressive internal structure. Our role is to help identify the qualities that matter for your project.

Loose gemstones for jewellers and jewellery designers

MANĒKO’s offering extends beyond white topaz to coloured gemstones such as sapphire, aquamarine, amethyst, citrine, tourmaline, spinel, garnet, zircon and moonstone. Availability depends on the stone, size, colour and cut. Our gemstone business focuses on coloured and colourless gemstones rather than diamonds.

For professional jewellery making, the practical details matter as much as the first impression. Carat weight, length, width and depth help a maker assess a stone against the intended setting. When choosing two stones for earrings, their proportions and visual balance deserve particular attention.

From loose gemstone to sculptural jewellery

Our experience with stones also informs MANĒKO’s handmade jewellery. In the Found Objects collection, natural gemstones meet recycled 925 sterling silver, organic surfaces and sculptural forms, with silver and gold-plated finishes. The stone is considered as part of the whole composition.

Discuss your next gemstone project with MANĒKO

Whether you are sourcing a single stone for a bespoke commission or exploring materials for a collection, we welcome a clear brief. Tell us the gemstone type, preferred colour, approximate dimensions, quantity and budget. We can then discuss current availability and the details that matter to your design.

Gemstone terminology and professional references

When comparing natural gemstones, clear terminology about identity, treatments and descriptions matters. The CIBJO gemstone and precious-metal standards offer an international industry reference, while the Gem-A Gem Hub provides educational articles about gemmology.
