Choosing Loose Gemstones for Jewellery Making

A loose gemstone should suit the design and the setting it will be used in. Before choosing by colour or carat weight alone, compare the stone's measurements and the practical requirements of your project.

Start with the dimensions

For oval, pear and cushion shapes, compare length, width and depth. For round stones, check diameter and depth. A stone's face-up appearance and its fit in a setting depend on these dimensions.

Carat describes weight

One carat is 0.2 grams. Two gemstones of the same carat weight can have different dimensions because of their material and proportions. Always check millimetres alongside carats.

Single stones and matching pairs

Check the quantity stated in the listing. Our current white topaz listings are for individual stones. For earrings, compare two stones for dimensions, shape, colour and proportions rather than assuming that equal carat weights make a pair.

Ask about treatment and documentation

Confirm the stone's identity, any known treatment and available documentation. A supplier's location is not in itself proof of a gemstone's geological origin. Ask about the specific stone if these details are important for your project.
