Faceted white topaz – MANĒKO gemstone selection

Choosing two loose gemstones for earrings: what makes a pair?

Buying stones for earrings requires a comparison between two individual objects. A pair should work together when seen in the same light and from the same angle. Equal carat weights can be a useful starting point, but they do not establish a visual match.

Begin with the visible outline

Decide whether the earrings should be round, oval, pear-shaped or cushion-shaped. Compare diameter for round stones, and length and width for the other outlines. If the design uses pear cuts, also consider how the pointed ends will be oriented. A deliberately contrasting design is possible, but it should be a conscious choice.

A real comparison: two round white topazes at 1.20 ct

The 1.20 ct round white topaz with 5.95 mm diameter and the 1.20 ct round white topaz with 6.01 mm diameter have different listed depths: 4.21 mm and 4.30 mm. These are measurements to discuss with the maker, not a statement that the two stones form a matched pair. Photographs, actual appearance and the planned setting also need checking.

Compare colour, clarity and proportions together

Ask to compare both stones under comparable lighting. Look at colour balance, visible inclusions, outline and how the facets appear from above. Photographs taken at different angles or exposures can make comparison difficult. If you need further photographs or a side-by-side view, ask what is available for those particular stones before ordering.

Confirm quantity and the setting requirements

Our current white topaz listings are for one stone each. Ordering one listing does not include a second stone. Read the individual specifications and confirm whether two selected stones can work in your intended settings. For studs, depth and how far the stone sits above the ear can affect the final design; for drops, consider the direction and balance of each setting.
